Front vs Back Scoring
(Golf’s Split Personality)

How often have you played great on the front nine, and then tanked on the back?

Or the opposite? Horrible front nine and then you played like a tour pro on the back nine?

It happens to everyone. But how often?

A friend of mine was complaining he is the only one that does this (hint: he's not). His complaining got me curious how often it happens across skill levels.

Off to the Arccos Database we go! Arccos is about to pass an astounding 862 million shots tracked! (Use code DATALOU15 to save 15%).

The table below shows how often (and by how many shots) players score differently between the front and the back. For example, scratch players have two shots of difference between their front and back nine in 20.5% of their rounds.

I also looked at how often players score net 5 under par or better for nine holes.

My Thoughts

As you can see, having big scoring differences between the front and the back nine is something that happens at every skill level. If you are like my friend and think you are the only one that does this, you are not. Most every golfer occasionally has some big differences between front and back nine scoring. Don’t beat yourself up when this happens!

The second visual above is also VERY interesting. A 20 index player scores net five under or better for nine holes 3.75% of the time (about once every 27 rounds).

A scratch player scores net five under for nine holes 0.07% of the time (about once every 1429 rounds!).
